Sanitation & Water: 2017 Mjuwimi

Here is a thrilling example of how the lives of women and girls in rural Tanzania can be richly and sustainedly enhanced. The secret ingredients are: Picking the right thing to fix, (and water is right at the top of the list); finding the right local boss, (and SAWA are true professionals); and building on a foundation of community involvement and commitment - which is the element that Tushikamane provides.

... and, of course, finding a very few £ to pay for it ...

If you want to help a new generation of girls use their heads for education instead of water buckets, then visit: http://www.missionmorogoro.org.uk/

£25 makes a huge difference. £500 can pay for an entire well. Tushikamane will ensure that your investment is maintained and sustained.

REHABILITATION OF MJUINI WELL

Village: Tunguli, Kilindi district, Tanga region
Date: 28th September – 1st October 2017
Technician: JumaMape (+255 787 841 455

The problem:
Poor amount of dirty water from the only well, with much effort, and much time spent:

Community contributions
Burnt bricks 60 pieces worth 6,000 TZS ( 2 GBP), 30 buckets of sand wort 15,000 TZS (5 GBP) and man power of 4 people for 4 days. The 4 people man power, including 2 pump well care takers, supported the technician during the construction works.

Activities
·        Well cleaning – ½ a of the well was full of rubbish (buckets, tins…) and muds. After cleaning the well depth measurements read 9m deep, and 6.5m static water level.
·        Dewatering the well to allow construction. This was for more than three hours using buckets and temporary installed rope pump.
·        Demolishing the existed slab
·        Casting a new slab and pump cover – including curing for 3 days
·        Fitting the slab and pump cover and installing a rope pump with ¾ inch riser (therefore ¾ inch pistons/washers)
·        Constant Pumping test using a rope pump for 1 hour. The well is having a yield of more than 1,200 litres per hour
·        Training (on job training) of 3well care takers during the 4 days filed work. They were trained on well cleaning, pump installation and more specifically onchanging or replacing the rope. The trained well care takers are:
1.      ElikanaStanieliSendalo - +255 763 381 683
2.      Malanda - +255 758 247 007
3.      MsafiriBonge
·        The work was approved/handed over to village chair, village executive officer in the presence of community members.
The following tools and material were handed over to well care takers as spares for maintenance in the presence of village leaders
·        2 Spanners size 17
·        1 litle oil for pump lubrication
·        a rope with pistons/washers
·        1 leading bar and leading rope
·        1 Fishing hook/tool
·        Maintenance card
·        Pieces of pipes (1½  and ¾ inches)

The result:

The Community is willing to co-operate and give and necessary contributions to rehabilitate the remaining wells.  They also promised to take care and maintain the well.
